Symptoms that point at the blower
- Burners light but no air ever comes from the registers
- Air volume is noticeably lower than it used to be
- The blower hums but does not spin, or spins slowly
- Squealing, grinding or rumbling during operation
- The blower runs continuously and never shuts off
- The furnace heats, overheats and shuts down on the limit switch
PSC versus ECM motors
Older furnaces generally use a permanent split capacitor motor with fixed speed taps and a separate run capacitor. Newer high-efficiency equipment usually uses an electronically commutated motor with onboard electronics that varies speed to maintain airflow.
The difference matters. A PSC failure is often just a capacitor — an inexpensive, quick repair. An ECM failure may involve the motor module or the motor assembly itself, which is a more significant expense and can factor into a repair versus replacement discussion on an older system.
Common failure causes
- Failed run capacitor — the most frequent cause of a humming, non-starting PSC blower
- Worn motor bearings producing squeal or grind
- A blower wheel packed with dust, unbalancing the assembly and overloading the motor
- Blower relay failure on the control board
- Overheating from restricted airflow repeatedly tripping the motor's thermal protector
- Loose or corroded wiring at the motor connections

Safe checks
Do not open the blower compartment, spin the wheel by hand while powered, or attempt to discharge or replace a capacitor. Capacitors store energy even after power is removed.
- Confirm the thermostat fan setting; ON keeps the blower running by design.
- Replace the filter and clear return grilles to reduce load on the motor.
- Listen for a hum without rotation, which strongly suggests a capacitor or seized bearing.
- Shut the furnace off at the service switch if you hear grinding, and schedule service.
What good blower service includes
A thorough visit checks motor amp draw against nameplate, verifies capacitor microfarad value, inspects the wheel for buildup, confirms the correct speed tap or ECM programming, and measures static pressure to confirm the system can actually move design airflow. Furnace Safety Comes First
If you smell gas, see smoke or fire, or suspect carbon monoxide, stop troubleshooting. Move everyone out of the affected area, then contact your gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
Never bypass a pressure switch, limit switch, rollout switch, door switch or flame sensor, and never attempt gas valve, burner, heat exchanger or live-voltage work. Those controls exist to shut the furnace down before a dangerous condition develops.
