Typical service life
Gas furnaces commonly last fifteen to twenty years, with well-maintained units sometimes going longer and neglected ones failing sooner. Electric furnaces often last longer because they have no combustion components to corrode, though their blowers and elements still wear.
Service life is not a countdown clock. A twelve-year-old furnace that has been maintained and has healthy airflow may have years left. A ten-year-old furnace that has run with clogged filters and an undersized return may not.
What shortens a furnace's life
Airflow is the recurring theme. Weak airflow and short cycling are not just comfort complaints — they are life-shortening conditions.

Finding your furnace's age
The data plate inside or on the furnace cabinet lists the model and serial number. Most manufacturers encode the manufacture date in the serial, often as a year and week. If you cannot decode it, a technician can, and it is worth knowing before any major repair decision.
Signs the end is approaching
