Sizing is not guesswork
The correct capacity comes from a load calculation based on the home's square footage, insulation, window area, orientation, infiltration and local design temperature — not from matching the nameplate on the old unit. Many existing furnaces were oversized when installed, and copying that number simply repeats the mistake.
An oversized furnace short cycles, produces uneven temperatures and wears components faster. A correctly sized one runs longer, gentler cycles that hold temperature steadily, which is exactly what you want during a Fort Collins cold snap.

The ductwork question
A new furnace connected to a duct system that cannot deliver its rated airflow will underperform from day one. Static pressure measurement, return capacity, filter rack sizing and plenum transitions should all be evaluated as part of a replacement quote. Correcting a restrictive return during the swap is far cheaper than revisiting it later.

Furnace Safety Comes First
If you smell gas, see smoke or fire, or suspect carbon monoxide, stop troubleshooting. Move everyone out of the affected area, then contact your gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
Never bypass a pressure switch, limit switch, rollout switch, door switch or flame sensor, and never attempt gas valve, burner, heat exchanger or live-voltage work. Those controls exist to shut the furnace down before a dangerous condition develops.
