- Loud bang or boom at ignition — delayed ignition, where gas accumulates briefly before lighting. This deserves prompt professional attention.
- Metallic banging or popping during startup and shutdown — usually ductwork expanding and contracting, often harmless but sometimes a sign of high static pressure.
- High-pitched squeal — commonly a blower bearing or motor issue; on older belt-drive systems, a slipping belt.
- Continuous rattle — loose panel, unsecured ductwork, or debris drawn into the blower compartment.

Which noises are urgent

- Confirm the access panel and any sheet metal covers are secured.
- Replace a dirty filter and listen for a change in whistling or roaring.
- Look for obvious loose duct straps in accessible basement or crawlspace runs.
