How an electric furnace produces heat
Instead of burners, an electric furnace uses resistance heating elements — essentially heavy-duty coils — staged on in sequence. Sequencers or relays bring elements online one at a time to avoid a large simultaneous current draw, and the blower moves air across them into the duct system.
Because there is no flame, there is no flame sensing, no draft proving and no combustion venting. The safety controls that remain are thermal: high-limit switches and thermal fuses that cut power if airflow fails.
Common electric furnace failures

- Failed sequencers or contactors that never energize an element stage

Safety considerations with electric heat
Electric furnaces carry high-current circuits that remain hazardous even when the thermostat is satisfied. Element blocks, sequencers and contactors should only be serviced with power confirmed off at the disconnect and verified with a meter. This is not homeowner territory. A breaker that trips repeatedly is signalling a fault that needs to be found, not reset again.
